To mark Women’s History Month, listen to actress Alfre Woodard performing Sojourner Truth’s famous “Ain’t I a Woman” speech, delivered at the Women’s Convention in Akron, Ohio in 1851. Sojourner Truth, who was formerly enslaved and became an anti-slavery activist, spoke extemporaneously. She recalled a man saying that women couldn’t have the same rights as men because Christ was not a woman. Sojourner Truth responded: “Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman. Man ain’t had nothing to do with it.”
